The St. Thomas Aquinas Chapter of the National Honor Society is a chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership in the National Honor Society is offered to juniors and seniors who meet the criteria established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, these are: scholarship (cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above), leadership, service, and character. The preceding qualities of potential members are determined by a comprehensive application for admission.

The National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is the only international organization exclusively for secondary students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Individual secondary schools are invited to petition for a local chapter, through which individuals may be inducted into Society membership. Immediate benefits of affiliation include academic recognition, scholarship and award eligibility, and opportunities for networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts.

Requirements for membership:

• 3.5 grade point average - the previous year's average is considered for admittance.
• Vocal or instrumental audition with a song of the student's choice. The panel consists of Mrs. Murtha and the current Tri-M executive officers.
• All candidates must be able to attend the biweekly meetings immediately after school.
• All candidates must be able to help set up and take down for the periodic Tri-M Coffeehouses.

Tri-M members sponsor an annual "Parochial School Coffeehouse", open to students in grades 5 through 8 who attend our partner schools. Tri-M uses monies raised to offer a scholarship to one of the Danbury Music Centre's summer music programs, to one of the participants in the "Parochial School Coffeehouse".

The Student Ambassador Program is a leadership opportunity for a selected group of students who represent Immaculate High School at various school and admissions functions. Immaculate’s student ambassadors are our best advocates. A student ambassador is enthusiastic, articulate, involved in the life of the school, and a leader. This program involves a commitment of time and energy and will help develop your leadership, public speaking and interpersonal skills. The application process is in the summer of each year, with ambassadors accepted and trained in early September.

The Bee and Quiz Bowl Club allows students to compete against their peers and other schools in various academic competitions. These competitions range from fun games during club meetings to much more serious and formal competitions, such as the Connecticut Geography Challenge run by Central Connecticut State University. The club's main focus is currently geography, but expansion into other academic areas in the near future is very possible.

IHS School Organic Garden Project

Proposed organic site is just past the entrance into the school parking lot from the Ryders Lane entrance on the left-hand side. The proposed garden location
encompasses an approximately 50’ x 50’ area (see picture above).

Vision:

An organic garden area that will be an ongoing demonstration, learning, and teaching space for the cultivation of organically grown vegetables, wildflowers,
and medicinal plants. Design of the space would draw inspiration from “Walled Gardens” such as that in the John Jay Homestead herb garden and Martin
Crawford’s Forest Gardens which make use of perennial plants as aesthetic and functional elements to define the perimeter of the space while supporting
important ecological goals such as nitrogen fixation, building soil fertility, supporting beneficial insect and wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Garden design that integrates the functional presence of plants that build fertility in soils provides an immediate way to address the compelling issue of the
environmental/atmospheric impact of human activity including gardening and
farming. Plants that specialize in maintaining partnerships with beneficial soil dwelling organisms convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms of this most critical nutrient that become immediately available to plants within their “neighborhood” while greatly eliminating forms of nitrogen pollution (N 2 O) that come from
nitrogen fertilizers that are added to growing crops.

CyberPatriot’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition challenges teams of high school  students to find and fix cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual operating systems.

Learn the art of persuasion, compete in local, regional and national tournaments, improve public speaking skills and gain confidence. This club competes in the Connecticut Debate Association (CDA) throughout the academic year. Events that emphasize knowledge of governmental policy and action on both the domestic and international levels are also discussed.

Faculty Moderator: 

With the assistance of a teacher-sponsor and States' Attorney Harding, students actively experience the excitement of working in teams, exchanging ideas, setting goals, and examining issues while interacting with positive role models from area communities. By studying legal cases and preparing strategies and arguments for trial, students also develop presentation skills, analytic ability, and team cooperation. Students participate in rehearsal trials to lean more about the legal system in a competitive manner.

Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. Students step into the shoes of ambassadors to debate current issues on the organization’s agenda. While playing their roles as ambassadors, students make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure- all in the interest of mobilizing “international cooperation” to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world.
