Mustang Monthly

What an exciting time to be a Mustang as our Fall sports programs look strong through October! Many of our teams are gaining great momentum heading into the Southwest Conference (SWC) and State playoffs, with no signs of slowing down. Good luck to all of our student-athletes as they compete, and we hope everyone comes out to cheer them on!  Go to www.immaculatehs.org/athletics for a game/meet schedule.

Check out the highlights of what has been an exciting start to the 2019-2020 school year:

Girls Volleyball has had an outstanding season sitting 7th in the Class S standings with their 14-4 record! The Lady Mustangs are on track to compete for both the SWC and State titles in November. Led by senior captains Gabby Rynne and Alissa Brugnatelli, along with junior Aleksandra Box, the Lady Mustangs have tallied impressive wins against teams such as Notre-Dame Fairfield and New Milford (both in five sets). The Mustangs upcoming schedule consists of SWC matchups, including the rematch against New Milford on Wednesday, October 30.   CLICK HERE  for a GametimeCT article with video on the team.

Field Hockey picks up from last year with their 15-1 record as they look to defend their Class S State Championship. Sitting third in Class S ranking and first in the Patriot League, the Lady Mustangs have qualified for the SWC and State tournaments, making them an exciting team to watch come playoff time. The defense, led by senior captain/goalie Lauren Oskam and senior Victoria Bono, has only allowed six goals all season! Offensively, everyone scores for Immaculate (literally everyone) with senior captain Molly Coyle leading the charge in the midfield. The Lady Mustangs ended the regular season on October 22 with a 4-1 win over Pomperaug, and start the SWC playoffs on November 2. For a great article on our field hockey team, CLICK HERE.

Football pushes to make the State Tournament as they sit 9th in Class “M” at 3-1. The ATI United team has a great group of playmakers that help get in the win column. Senior Kevin Curry and junior Thomas Fahey have been all over the field as both have multiple interceptions and touchdowns on the year. Quarterback CJ Cianflone ‘20 leads the attack on offense rushing and passing for a total seven touchdowns on the year so far. ATI will “Play for the Cure” on October 26 in a big Class M matchup against Cheney Tech, who ranks 12th in Class M.

Girls Cross Country had an impressive showing at the SWC Championship meet, finishing second! Junior Ailene Doherty and sophomore Kayla Ondy finished in the top 10 with Ailene finishing 4th and Kayla finishing 6th. Congratulations to Ailene Doherty, Brigid Gage and Kayla Ondy, who are SWC - First Team runners, and to freshman Keelin Bremner (14th place) who is an All SWC - Second Team runner. Both the boys and girls teams finished the regular season as Patriot Division champions and look to retain their Class SS Championship on Saturday, October 26 at Wickham Park. Boys Cross Country senior James Sullivan ran to third place at the SWC Championship as the boys finished fifth as a team. Congratulations to James who was named to the All SWC - First team and senior Drew Mitchell (17th place) who was named an All SWC - Second Team runner.

Boys Soccer has worked their way into the Class S State Tournament with their 7-5-2 record. The boys finish their season with some important SWC matches against Weston, Notre-Dame Fairfield and Joel Barlow that can propel them into the SWC tournament. Goalie Nick Iannetta ‘21 and captain Andrew Talarico ‘21 have kept the Mustangs in games with their efforts on defense. Offensively, captains Nick Lenz ‘21 and Tristin DiNatale ’20 are the premier goal scorers for the team and Tristin scored the winning goal at the October 22 game vs. previously undefeated Weston 1-0, where Wyatt Jarboe ‘22 played goalie, filling in for Nick Ianetta who was out due to an injury. Senior night for the boys will be this Thursday, October 24 vs. Notre-Dame Fairfield, with playoffs approaching soon after!

Girls Soccer has also qualified for the Class S tournament with their 7-4-3 record. Junior captain Meryl McKenna and junior Giselle Rodriguez have lead the way for the Lady Mustangs as they have not lost a game since October 5. At their game against Weston on October 22, Madison Bourque '22 scored a hat trick and scored a goal with three minutes left in the game for the 5-4 victory.  The girls last home game will be Monday, October 28 vs. Joel Barlow, before they start preparing for the State Tournament.

Girls Swim has had a strong showing this year with their 7-2 record! The girls rank 3rd in the SWC giving them a chance to compete for a conference title in November. Fourteen girls on the team have qualified for the State Championships including senior captain Lauren Petta and junior Devin McGovern. The girls have two meets left before their SWC Championship meet at Pomperaug on November 5. The program is excited for the chance to capture it’s first SWC championship in years!

Student-Athletes Help Others With Play for the Cure Games

Immaculate students are encouraged to give back to their community, and they always do so graciously and generously! This year the girls volleyball and boys soccer teams hosted Play for the Cure games in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, raising funds for Ann’s Place in Danbury. Both the JV and Varsity teams wore pink practice T-shirts that were designed by junior Meryl McKenna in her Graphic Design II class.

Next the ATI Football Team and IHS Cheerleading partner to raise funds for Ann's Place and raise awareness for breast cancer at the home game in Mustang Valley against Cheney Tech on Saturday, October 26 at 2pm
