Immaculate High School and Abbott Tech High School are proud to announce that Timothy E. Smith is the new ATI United Football Coach. The team is a football co-op representing both Immaculate High School and Abbott Tech.
Smith was an assistant varsity head coach and co-offensive coordinator at Danbury High School, as well as a business education teacher at Danbury High School.
“We are very impressed with Tim’s passion for developing student-athletes on and off the field,” said Athletic Director Nelson Mingachos. “He is a local football hero."
Smith played football for Danbury High School and graduated in 1990 with a record of over 2,000 yards and 40 touchdowns. He was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2011. In 1989, Danbury High Coach Doug Morrell said Smith was "the best all-around running back I've coached in eight years.” Also in 1989, Smith was named All-State by both the Hartford Courant and the New Haven Register as well as repeating as a Bridgeport Post-Telegram All-Star and Offensive Player of the Year in his class. He was also honored as a New England Player of the Year and a New York Daily News Player of the Week.
Smith earned a four-year Division 1 FCS athletic football scholarship to play football at Delaware State University. He earned a bachelor of science in accounting and went on to earn a master’s in education from Goodwin University and the University of Bridgeport.
“Being a local football product, taking on the role of Head Coach at ATI is truly an honor,” Smith said. “What excites me the most is the opportunity to develop young men—not just as athletes, but as leaders in the classroom, in the community and in life. Football is an incredible tool for teaching resilience, teamwork and perseverance, and I want to help our players realize their full potential both on and off the field.”
