Immaculate High School Students of the Month 2009 - 2010
February 2010
Fine Arts
At its February meeting, the Recognition Committee selected a Student of the Month for Fine Arts. Among the students nominated were freshmen Julia Amodeo and Ashley Vairo, sophomores Christopher DiElsi and Katie Douglas, juniors Christine Armold, John Herlihy and Makela Stankey, and seniors Samantha Angermann, Ricardo DiPierro and Danielle Falls. Senior Ricardo DiPierro was chosen for “putting forth a strong effort during class day after day”. He shows a passion for learning by “bettering his playing skills and staying after school to work on music theory.” Ricardo shows outreach to his classmates by “inspiring others to become better players, and being funny and friendly with others in class.” He is “honest when he fails to do what is expected of him”, thus showing his integrity. Ricardo is “a gifted musician” and he has “inspired his teacher as a musician.” For these reasons, the Recognition Committee congratulates Ricardo DiPierro on his selection as the Fine Arts Student of the Month, and salutes the other students who were nominated in this subject area at Immaculate.
January 2010
Mathematics
The Recognition Committee met in January to make its Student of the Month choice in mathematics. Timothy Thomas was chosen.
December 2009
Computers
The Recognition Committee met in December to choose a "Student of the Month" in computers. Freshman Richard Kerins and senior Gregg Diamant were nominated in this area. Gregg Diamant was selected as Student of the Month in this subject for “working efficiently in a timely manner”, and “creating goals to enter the technology field.” Gregg assists others “in time of need whether it be classwork related or otherwise”, and does “his best at anything and everything he tries…” and is not “afraid to ask for help/assistance.” Gregg has “also competed in the IBM contest and has successfully completed the first round.” The Recognition Committee congratulates Gregg Diamant for his selection as Computer Student of the Month.
Physical Education
The students nominated for physical education included freshmen Aidan Buckley and Samantha Hooker, sophomore Alexa Sakorafos, juniors Francesca Braden and Michael Burke, and senior Robert Kenny. Senior Robert Kenny was chosen for doing every P.E. activity “with a smile”, having fun and giving “100%.” Robert shows a passion for learning by his totally committed effort, “understanding the concepts presented” and staying “involved with his peers” even while medically excused from the class. Robert demonstrates outreach by having fun, with his “energy which is contagious”. He “gets everyone involved...” and is “an honest hardworking individual who leads by example.” Robert is a senior transfer student who “has made a smooth transition” and who has taken P.E. in his senior year “without complaining” and with enthusiasm. For all these reason, the Recognition Committee is pleased to select Robert Kenny as the physical education Student of the Month, and applauds all those students nominated in this subject area at Immaculate.
November 2009
Language Arts
The Recognition Committee selected the Student of the Month in Language Arts at its November meeting. The students who were nominated included freshmen Nicholas Arne and Megan McDermott, sophomores David Lasco, Victoria Mathews and Madeline McDermott, juniors Joe Magrino and Michael Matthews, and seniors Megan Mitchell and Gabriela Tejeda. The committee was delighted to select junior Joe Magrino, who was nominated by two separate teachers for language arts. Joe was recognized for demonstrating good effort and determination by “trying harder than almost any student I’ve ever had.” Joe did all extra credit work available to him “…to help not only his grade, but his own learning process as well.” He demonstrated his passion for learning by “consistently doing more than is required for class…”, and by asking “thought-provoking questions in class.” Joe demonstrated outreach to others by “bringing a positive attitude each day and being an example to others.” He gave an “honest, consistent effort” in class which enabled him to advance to the honors level this year. The committee congratulates Joe Magrino for his efforts and achievements, and congratulates all the students nominated for their efforts in language arts at Immaculate.
October 2009
World Languages

The Student of the Month in World Languages was chosen in October by the Recognition Committee. The students who were nominated included freshmen Courtney Calo and Seth Morris, sophomores Samantha Brown, Ashley Hrabcsak and Madeline McDermott, juniors Ashleigh Glowacki, Elizabeth Keating, Michael Matthews and Taylor O’Brien, and seniors Heather Brosz, Emily DaSilva and Sean McGrath. From a great field of nominees, the committee was pleased to select sophomore Samantha Brown for “…exceeding expectations when doing projects or, indeed, any work in class.” Samantha shows her passion for learning by “maintaining the highest degree of interest and commitment.” She demonstrates outreach to others by “…cheerfully coaching others when appropriate and congratulating them when they do well.” Samantha is “top-notch in EVERY way!” For all of these reasons, the committee congratulates Samantha Brown for her accomplishments, and congratulates all the students nominated for their efforts in world languages at Immaculate.
Immaculate High School Students of the Month are nominated by their teachers on the basis of their consistent good effort, their determination and perseverance, their passion for learning, their integrity and, when applicable, notable improvement in their work.
A Recognition Committee was established in 2002 to advocate for and facilitate greater recognition of student academic and service excellence. This committee consists of one or two parents of students from each academic year, two IHS teachers, one IHS administrator and ideally, an Immaculate Parents Association liaison member.
Departments each month are invited to nominate students from each grade level, if possible, for recognition as their Student of the Month. Each staff member in the department may submit up to four nominations: one for each grade. When forms are submitted, the students are assigned a code number which becomes the sole identifier of the nominee for the Recognition Committee until it has reached a consensus. All discussions and decisions are made solely on the basis of the teacher's description of the specific merits of a nominee.
