ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Gerard '86 and Maggie (Palumbo) '88 Ryan

Gerard & Maggie Ryan pictured with their 3 children, Jake (18), Tyler (15) and Max (10).

Gerard and Maggie started dating in May of 1991, two days before Gerard was commissioned in the Air Force.  They got married three years later, and now are raising their sons in Triangle, VA. Little did Gerard and Maggie know when they were in Mustang Valley - Gerard as an IHS football player, and Maggie as a cheerleader - that they would be together some 30 years later.

Gerard is a 23 year Air Force Special Operations Colonel, stationed at the Pentagon. He recently returned from a 1-year deployment in Kabul, Afghanistan.  Gerard worked as the Senior Advisor to the Afghan National Security Advisor and Director, Presidential Information Coordination Center (PICC). The PICC was modeled after the White House Situation Room to provide a coordinated message to the President of Afghanistan.  While at Immaculate, Gerard played football, ice hockey and was on the Sudent Council. He travelled on 2 trips to Europe, which were put together by Mr. Muchanski. Gerard went on to graduate from Fordham University.

Maggie was a cheerleader and ran track at Immaculate.  She belonged to various clubs, including the yearbook committee and dance committee. After IHS, Maggie graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a B.A. in History. She is currently a Lead Stager for Staged Interior.  She does home staging and design for properties in Northern Virgina and Washington D.C.  She has been a military spouse for over 20 years, which has kept her busy with various volunteer and leadership roles. Spending family time is very important to the Ryan family, as Gerard has had to be away for extended periods over the years with the Air Force.

When asked what Immaculate means to Gerard, he commented, "IHS helped to prepare me for the future by instilling discipline both on and off the field and to be respectful of otheres and their views. I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Muchanski's World War II History class. That prepared me well for a career in the military, as I understood how WWII shaped our National Security, our Allies perspectives and meeting today's threats.  Mr. Couch's Physics class also instilled a great deal of discipline in me.  The sense of community from IHS, is still something I enjoy in the Air Force every day."  He added, "IHS has been a special place for me to remember and think about. I think that I really appreciate my experience, the older I get. I have seen many things in the world, but not many places that have the closeness we enjoyed together at Immaculate."

Maggie shared, "Immaculate allowed me to be confident in myself.  The staff taught me to set goals and not to limit myself."  She continued, "Immaculate means connections and happy memories.  High School can be difficult and awkward, but I can honestly say that my graduating class was a great group of people, that I have wonderful memories of and whom I still stay in touch with."

Thank you to Gerard and Maggie for their many sacrifices for our country and for being another shining example of just how wonderful our alumni are! We look forward to seeing them and their fellow alumni at Immaculate for our 50th Anniversary Celebration in October. MUSTANG PRIDE!

The first phase of Immaculate High School's front entrance renovation will be complete in time to welcome students on the first day of school.  Although aesthetics were considered as a reason for the front entrance to be re-constructed, the construction is mainly being done to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and guests.  In addition to the building construction, funds are still being raised to enhance the walkways and to address the need to improve front entrance parking for handicapped persons and for drop-off.  Your donation, no matter the amount, will help us make a difference for so many. Simply click here to contribute to our efforts. Thank you in advance for your generous support!
